Hundreds of suckermouth catfish found dead in polluted Cileungsi River - Jakarta Post

Hundreds of suckermouth catfish in the Cileungsi River in Bogor, West Java, were found dead, allegedly because of pollution, during an inspection on Tuesday. Jakarta Ombudsman head Teguh Nugroho said the inspection was carried out in several spots of the river where it was suspected the pollution originated, namely the Wika Bridge, the Narogong Bridge in the border areas of Bogor regency and Bekasi City, and the Pocong Bridge. “At the last location, we found hundreds of dead suckermouth catfish. In addition, the water of the river is blackened, smelly and foamy,” Teguh said in a media statement released on Wednesday. Teguh said the fish were usually quite resistant to pollutants from domestic waste and that the deaths could be an indication of worsening pollution in the Cileungsi River. He suspected that the pollution was chemical waste discarded by factories in t...

Bogor Zoology Museum celebrates 125th anniversary - The Jakarta Post - Jakarta Post

Bogor Zoology Museum celebrated its 125th anniversary in the Cibinong Science Center, Botanical Garden Cibinong, on Tuesday.

Enny Sudarmonowaty, the deputy head of the Department of Biology at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), said that the museum was the gate to deeper understanding of Indonesia’s animal biodiversity.

The zoology museum is active in conducting research and exploration of Indonesia’s rich biodiversity, Enny said. The research is important as a reference for wildlife protection.

According to Enny, the museum often engages in important research on animal bio systems and ecology, the loss of biodiversity, biological resource potential, the mitigation of foreign species invasion and wildlife protection and conservation.

Meanwhile, Taufiq Purna Nugraha, the coordinator for revitalization activity of Bogor Zoology Museum, said 240 exploration activities around Indonesia had been initiated by the museum together with Bogor Botanical Garden.

Besides the exhibited specimens, the Museum also has 3 million specimens that are not exhibited. This number will keep growing every year, making Bogor Zoology Museum an important home for South East Asia biodiversity studies. (gis)

Jokowi welcomes Malaysian king’s visit with Bogor Botanical Gardens tour - The Jakarta Post - Jakarta Post

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo welcomed Malaysian King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah to Indonesia on Tuesday with a drive around the Bogor Botanical Gardens near Bogor Palace in West Java.

Sultan Abdullah and his wife Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Iskandariah, along with their daughters, arrived at the palace on Tuesday morning and were welcomed with a lavish ceremony hosted by Jokowi and First Lady Iriana.

Following the ceremony, Jokowi and Sultan Abdullah planted a damar tree as a symbol of good bilateral ties between the two neighboring countries.

The President later took the wheel of a white golf cart and drove the Malaysian head of state around the Bogor Botanical Gardens, during which they were seen talking casually. Iriana and Azizah joined them for the drive, sitting in the backseat of the cart.

Jokowi later hosted a lunch banquet with the Malaysian king’s entourage, during which the President expressed how the country was honored to receive Sultan Abdullah.

“I can give assurances that this visit will be able to strengthen the ties between our countries, Malaysia and Indonesia,” Jokowi said in his speech before making a toast that wished for the wellbeing and success of the king and his family.

Sultan Abdullah also expressed his appreciation for Jokowi and Iriana as well as the Indonesian people who warmly welcomed his entourage.

“I pray so that the relations between Malaysia and Indonesia will always be maintained and blessed with everlasting prosperity [and] harmony,” Sultan Abdullah said.

Indonesia is the second country after Brunei Darussalam to welcome Sultan Abdullah in a diplomatic visit since he took an oath as the 16th king of Malaysia in January, according to the Indonesian Foreign Ministry.

During a bilateral meeting on Tuesday, Jokowi and Sultan Abdullah discussed various issues, including the need for the two countries to fight together against the European Union's plan to phase out crude palm oil (CPO) from biofuel by 2030, the ministry said.

They also explored possible ways to strengthen collaboration between state energy holding company Pertamina and Malaysia’s state-owned oil giant Petronas.

“The President also spoke about Indonesian citizens living in Malaysia [...] many of whom faced legal problems. We indeed respect [Malaysian] laws, but we also request for [Indonesian nationals] there to be given fair treatment,” Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi said. (afr)

Bogor city, regency root for new Greater Bogor province - Jakarta Post

An old idea of a new province separate from West Java called Bogor Raya (Greater Bogor) has resurfaced following a proposal initiated by the Bogor city and Bogor regency administrations in their attempt to manage accelerating development.Bogor Mayor Bima Arya Sugiarto said he would continue to mull over the idea of establishing a new province and invite healthy public discussions, as well as studies conducted by universities. The idea for a Bogor Raya province first took root in the 1990s, when several areas under the authority of Bogor regency were administratively moved under Bogor city, which needed more space for its growing population.“Now, we also need to anticipate [overcrowding], because in 10 years, the population of Bogor city may grow to 1.5 million people; we need to have a study on that,” Bima said on Wednesday. The city administration is currently studying four scenarios:...

Thousands of Bogor residents proclaim independence from plastic - The Jakarta Post - Jakarta Post

Theresia Sufa

Bogor

Thousands of Bogor residents in West Java have declared their independence from plastic as part of a recency-wide environmental campaign as well as Indonesia’s 74th Independence Day.

The declaration ceremony was held at Tegar Beriman field in Cibinong district on the same day the Bogor regency administration officially enacted Regental Regulation No. 13/2019 on the reduction of plastic and Styrofoam usage, under which it will also carry out the Bogor Antik (Green Without Plastic) program.

The event was attended by Bogor Regent Ade Yasin, his deputy Iwan Setiawan, Bogor Environment Agency officials and students, who crowded the streets in celebration of both the anti-plastic campaign and the country’s Independence Day.

“This policy applies to modern markets, shopping centers, hotels, restaurants, cafes and all Bogor-based agencies, state-owned and private-owned companies, as well as educational institutions,” said Ade Yasin during Saturday’s ceremony.

He added that the regulation aimed to reduce plastic usage by 50 percent, then urged Bogor residents to stay committed to the campaign by also cleaning up their plastic waste properly and avoid throwing garbage into the regency’s rivers.

“The people are expected to slowly adjust themselves to the attitude of independence from plastic bags. It is time to start using leaves to wrap our food and other materials that can easily decompose,” said Ade. – JP

Bogor, W Java (ANTARA) - The Bogor Immigration Office exempted two citizens whose birthdays fell on August 17, Indonesia’s 74th Independence Day, from paying the administrative fees for their passports, the office head, Suhendra stated here Saturday.

He explained that the free-administration fee passports were part of the celebrations organized by the Immigration Office and the state-owned postal company PT Pos Indonesia.

Tania and Sudarti were the two Bogor citizens chosen by the immigration office to receive the special passports. They were selected from the dozens of people who had applied for the special passports, Suhendra said.

"We had announced this program on our website and some social media platforms," Suhendra explained.

Besides the special passport, the Bogor Immigration Office in West Java Province also organized other events to commemorate Independence Day. These included a ceremony where the most loyal employees were felicitated, followed by fun games such as mini soccer and table tennis or ping-pong.

The Immigration Office chief highlighted the fact that human capital was a crucial factor in the development of the nation. He praised the quality of civil servants, who he said are professional, responsible, and committed to their work. (INE)

Bogor Set to Impose Plastic Ban Starting on Independence Day - En Tempo.co

Bogor Set to Impose Plastic Ban Starting on Independence Day - En Tempo.co

TEMPO.CO, Bogor - Bogor Regency is set to impose plastic ban policy following the issuance of the Bogor Regent's Regulation No. 13/2019 that will take effect starting August 17 in line with the 74th Indonesian Independence Day.

Environment Agency official Atis Tardiana explained the ban would affect minimarkets, supermarkets, shopping malls, hotels, cafes, state and educational institutions.

Atis explained that the Bogor administration would no longer provide meals wrapped in single-use packages during regional meetings or events. “All regional working units (SKPD) will no longer provide rice boxes for meeting meals, but do set up a buffet,” he said.

According to him, setting up a buffet would help reduce non-degradable plastic waste. Other than plastic wraps, plastic bottles and glass would also be replaced.

“Every state official can also refrain themselves from producing plastic waste in their working area,” he added.

Atis hoped the implementation of the plastic ban policy will change the public habit in producing waste. “Averagely, a person produces two plastic bags a day,” he said.

GKI Yasmin dispute to be settled this year: Bogor Mayor - The Jakarta Post - Jakarta Post

GKI Yasmin dispute to be settled this year: Bogor Mayor - The Jakarta Post - Jakarta Post

The city administration of Bogor in West Java has vowed to resolve a dispute over a church that has been refused a building permit for years despite a Supreme Court ruling in its favor.

Bogor Mayor Bima Arya said there were three options to solve the dispute: either to build a new church at a new location with a new building permit (IMB), to relocate the church or to apply a land-sharing scheme.

“I’m very optimistic that the GKI Yasmin [dispute] will be resolved soon. I hope there will be good news for Christmas this year,” he said on Tuesday as quoted by tribunnews.com.

“We have agreed [to focus] on the options for a solution; we will no longer discuss legal issues from the past,” Bima added as reported by tempo.co. “This is a significant step in a process of years.

Bima went on to say that the progress came after meetings involving the Ombudsman and a group of seven people comprising city officials as well as representatives of the Muslim community and GKI Yasmin.

In response to the statement, Ifan Haryanto, the head of the Bogor City chapter of Indonesia’s largest Islamic organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), said through a press release made available to The Jakarta Post that the group backed the city administration’s move.

“[We] fully support the Bogor mayor’s policy that aims at realizing a peaceful and tolerant city of Bogor, in line with the NU’s principle of appreciating differences and respecting those with different life principles,” he said.

Back in 2008, the Bogor city administration issued a decree freezing the GKI church’s building permit, in response to protest from some residents.

The Bandung State Administrative Court (PTUN) and the State Administrative High Court in Jakarta ruled in favor of the church and ordered the administration to revoke the decree. In 2010, the Supreme Court also ruled in favor of GKI Yasmin.

However, Bima’s predecessor, Diani Budiarto, revoked the church’s building permit in 2011, forcing the congregation to hold sermons, including Christmas celebrations, outside the building for years, since they did not have a place to worship.

Bogor to conduct ecotourism promotion through Halimun Youth Camp - ANTARA

Cibinong, West Java (ANTARA) - The Bogor district administration will organize the Halimun Youth Camp 2019 (HYCamp2019) on August 24-25, this year, to celebrate Indonesia's National Day and promote Mount Halimun as a tourist destination globally.

Hiking to Mount Halimun located inside the Mount Halimun Salak National Park will enliven the event, Alfisa Triatmoko of the HYCamp 2019 Organizing Committee, stated here on Monday.

"This event, involving foreign participants, is aimed at promoting ecotourism in Bogor," he told Antara.

The HYCamp will encourage the younger generation to care for nature and help preserve the environment, he added.

"There will be several benefits for the participants of the HYCamp, as they will also indulge themselves in the amazing scenery of Mount Halimun," he remarked.

Among tourist attractions on Mount Halimun and in its surrounding areas are the Nirmala tea plantation, 34 waterfalls, rice terraces, and unique local traditions and culture.

The HYCamp 2019 is for youngsters in the age group of 16 and 30 years, and the registration is free and open from August 6 to 19, 2019.

Further information can be obtained on Instagram @hycamp2019, and Facebook Page @halimunyouthcamp.

Halimun in Sundanese language means mist. The upper section of Mount Halimun, in the north area, is almost always covered by mist with a soaring elevation of 1,929 meters.

Traveling to the highlands will offer visitors an opportunity to take in the refreshing, cool air and experience up-close the sprawling fertile greenery.

Established in 1992, the national park has been a protected habitat for the endangered West Java gibbons and the Javan lutung (Trachypithecus auratus), also known as the ebony lutung and Javan langur, which is a monkey belonging to the Colobinae sub-family. Bogor regent wants abandoned buses to be used for school transportation - The Jakarta Post - Jakarta Post

Bogor regent wants abandoned buses to be used for school transportation - The Jakarta Post - Jakarta Post

Bogor Regent Ade Yasin has proposed for the hundreds of Transjakarta buses idling around in an empty field in Dramaga district, West Java, to be utilized as school buses.

“The buses don’t possess permits to operate as public transportation anyway, so why don’t we designate them as school buses,” said Ade.

According to him, some of the 300 abandoned buses are still functional. Ade insisted the functional buses be used for the benefit of the public.

“Since these buses are located not too far from the street, I think it’s not wise to keep them there for too long,” said Ade as quoted by tempo.co on Monday.

Ade said he will send an objection letter to the owner of the buses. Despite being kept on private property, he thinks there needs to be coordination between the Bogor administration and the owner.

Meanwhile, state-owned bus operator Transjakarta said the hundreds of buses idling around in Bogor and Ciputat, South Tangerang, were not owned by the company.

“We need to clarify that the abandoned buses at both locations are not ours,” said Transjakarta public relations head Wibowo.

Wibowo reaffirmed the company’s service and development director Achmad Izzul Waro’s earlier statement, which claimed that the abandoned buses were the result of the Jakarta administration’s 2013 procurement, which was eventually canceled before the buses got a chance to operate on the streets. (bry)

Father, son found dead in Bogor in suspected murder-suicide - The Jakarta Post - Jakarta Post

Father, son found dead in Bogor in suspected murder-suicide - The Jakarta Post - Jakarta Post

A father and his son were found dead at their home in Rawa Panjang, Bojong Gede, Bogor, on Monday in a suspected murder-suicide motivated by depression, police have claimed.

Bojong Gede Police chief Comr. Agus Koster Sinaga said that according to the police's initial investigation, the father, identified as Rudi Hermawan, 40, apparently hanged his 8-year-old son, who had a disability, before committing suicide.

“Early assumptions [indicate] the father first hanged the son, then the father hanged himself,” Agus said on Monday, kompas.com reported.

He added that the bodies were first discovered by another member of Rudi’s family, Yuni Devinawati, a school teacher, who said she grew concerned when Rudi did not accompany her child to school as he used to do each morning.

“When [the family member] looked through the ventilation of the house, [she discovered] them both hanging,” he said.

Police said they believe the incident was motivated by frustration.

“We suspect the victim was in despair after his wife passed away last year,” Agus said.

Bojong Gede Police crime unit head First. Insp. Jajang Rahmat said that according to eyewitness testimony, the victim reportedly wrote messages on WhatsApp, saying that he wanted to “join” his late wife.

The police’s initial assumption was also supported by the absence of any indication of physical abuse at the scene.

“However, we will continue to dig deeper into the case,” Jajang said, tribunnews.com reported. (sau)

Big Cabinet family enjoys fun, games at Bogor Palace - The Jakarta Post - Jakarta Post

The big family of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s Cabinet gathered at Bogor Palace, West Java, on Sunday to enjoy a range of fun activities including kerupuk (cracker) eating races and soccer to “strengthen their solidarity” after going through various challenges while serving the country for almost five years.

“We invited everyone [in the Cabinet] over who has worked hand-in-hand for the good of the government and the nation,” the President said as reported by Antara. Vice President Jusuf Kalla and his wife Mufidah Jusuf Kalla also attended the event.

Jokowi expressed hope the ministries could improve their synergy afterward, although he did not confirm whether he would maintain the formation of his current cabinet in his next term.

Speculation has been rife that the President plans to remove several names from his Cabinet for failing to perform to expectations. (vny)
